Meet Asta and Rex

March 23rd, 2016 by Innkeeper

Here at Hacienda Vargas Bed and Breakfast we love and adore animals. If you have stayed with us before you were probably greeted by our apricot and black Standard Poodles, Asta and Rex. They have unofficially become the mascots of the property and love meeting new friends.

Asta & Rex in Jemez

Asta (5)  has claimed the position of resident host and is exceptional at making sure all of our guests are warmly welcomed. Rex (15) is more low key and tends to do his own thing. If you try to call him and he does not answer, it is not because he is ignoring you, at (age) has gone 90 percent deaf. Though he doesn’t get around much he enjoys a good party.

We love our animals and know your four legged friends are part of the family. That is why we have made Hacienda Vargas a place for all members of the family to come and relax. Make a reservation for your next getaway at Hacienda Vargas (505) 273-6618 or online.

10 Ways To Surprise Your Valentine With A Romantic Weekend Getaway They Will Never Forget

January 31st, 2016 by Innkeeper

If you have been to a store in the last month, you have seen first hand how the shelves are overflowing with chocolates and stuffed animals. While these have long-been the staple for February 14, we all know they are in no way original. This year, why not think outside of the box and do something that is not only unique, but also spontaneously romantic? Take a look at these 10 tips on how to surprise your Valentine with a romantic getaway you know they deserve.

  1. Make A Reservation: Try to book your stay right away! Planning ahead not only helps relieve the stress of planning but also gives you the ability to choose your favorite room.  VDay
  2. Cherish The Little Things: Romance does not always mean expensive or extravagant. Some of the most romantic things are free. Plan some time to go outside and stargaze, have wine by a fire and laugh at each other’s jokes.

  3. Tell Each Other Secrets: It is easy to forget how important quality time really is. Take some time to really talk to each other. You never know, you might learn something new about the other person (yes, even after 10 years of being together).
  4. Unplug From Technology: With the everyday hustle and bustle it is easy to be consumed by technology. We may be physically in the room, but with our phone in our hand are we really present? Unplug and you will be happy you did.
  5. Make Them A Relaxing Bath: Relaxation is key and our jacuzzi rooms are the perfect oasis for just that!Grab some flameless candles and bubble bath from the store before you check-in. Place the flameless candles around the jacuzzi tub and fill the tub with warm bubbly water. photo7
  6. Set The Mood: Create a playlist of songs that reminds you of your time together.
  7. Renew Your Vows / Elope: What better time to profess your love than Valentine’s Day? Love is in the air this time of year and the Hacienda Vargas historic chapel is a fairytale come true!
  8. Take A Romantic Drive: New Mexico is home to the most breathtaking views in the southwest. Spark up your getaway with a romantic drive to Santa Fe or Jemez.
  9. Watch A Classic New Mexico Sunset: Carve some time in your schedule to sit out and enjoy the one-of-a-kind New Mexico sunset! You and your Valentine will watch as a watercolor scene illuminates the sky. Beachside sunsets have nothing on the view we get in the Land of Enchantment!
  10. Sleep In/Dine In: As adults we seem to always be on the go. This  take some time to soak it all in. Set the alarm for a little later and grab some extra beauty sleep. Wake up to homemade pancakes, hash browns, bacon, fresh baked pastries, fresh fruit, juice and coffee all provided by the innkeepers of our historical B&B. hd_specials

Century Old Elements Bring Character To Hacienda Vargas

January 12th, 2016 by Innkeeper

Venture out to the inner courtyard of the Hacienda, past the 205-year-old Elm tree to the brick corridor leading out to the large north yard which is home to a pond, gazebo and our historic bell tower.

The bell tower, more than 110 years old, houses the original bell and years ago, acted as the community’s alarm bell and was used by the volunteer fire department.

That giant tree you passed on the way in? There’s proof it’s been providing shade for Hacienda Vargas guests since the late 1800s. An agricultural team from the University of New Mexico conducted a dendrochronology study dating the tree to over two centuries old.

Today, these two historical elements remain an integral part of the Hacienda Vargas grounds. Outdoor yoga under the elm is held in the warmer months. The bell tower is still used in celebration to announce our newly married couples and to denote time changes for retreats.

These are just a couple of features that help tell the history of our cozy B&B and give it the unique character that keeps visitors coming back time after time.

Take A Peek Into The Past At Hacienda Vargas

December 30th, 2015 by Innkeeper

IMG_6573Nestled along Route 66 in the Rio Grande Valley, Hacienda Vargas Bed and Breakfast and Wedding Chapel is a romantic, relaxing hideaway offering comfort and convenience for both out-of-state visitors and New Mexico residents. But what sets our cozy retreat apart is its beautiful and historic setting, reserving the spirit of the Old West, the influence of the original Spanish settlers, and the presence of the Pueblo Indian culture.

Long before its B&B days, Hacienda Vargas was the site of a stagecoach stop, a train station, a pony express station, a post office and a general store. Located on the historic El Camino Real, or Royal Highway, Hacienda Vargas lies along the historic route in which explorers, soldiers, adventurers and farmers traveled, seeking gold and land since the 16th century. Each part of the Hacienda Vargas property offers a glimpse into the region’s vibrant past.

It is thought that this particular piece of land was originally granted to a female Vigil who married into the Archibeque family.

IMG_6374The main Hacienda building was originally two separate buildings that date back more than 200 years ago. The south wing of the building was a stagecoach stop until around 1888 when the railroad tracks were laid across the Southwest. The wing is almost entirely adobe and very traditional with original brick floors, beamed and cove ceilings. The north wing, which includes the dining room and kitchen, is the oldest section of the main building. Its central interior wall is the original adobe and can be viewed through truth windows located off the dining room. The truth windows allow you to see original adobe walls.

The cornerstone of Hacienda Vargas, the adobe chapel is a special place with an unknown history. While we do not have a documented date of origin, we do know that it is in its original state with the exception of the new stain glass. This chapel has been the wedding site of hundreds of couples since the late 1800s.

Whether planning your own wedding or visiting for a weekend getaway, you’ll be able to experience the rich history surrounding Hacienda Vargas.

It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of Year

December 9th, 2015 by InsideOut Solutions

inset_inn1Break away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season for a quiet getaway to Hacienda Vargas.

It’s one of our favorite times of year here at HV. Many December days our grounds are covered in snow, holiday decorations adorn the B&B and our wood burning fireplaces are roaring, filling the building with the sound and smell of crackling firewood.

Whether you plan to hole up in our cozy abode or venture out, you’re sure to leave happy. This time of year there is an abundance of activities in the area you can only catch during the winter months:

Bundle up and enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historical headquarters of the Valle Grande. Sleigh and wagon rides at Valle Calles Grande in the Jemez are available all month long.

If you haven’t experienced New Mexico’s largest walk-through light show at Albuquerque’s River of Lights, you are missing out.  November 27 through December 30, millions of twinkling lights and dazzling holiday sculptures illuminate the Rio Grande Bio Park in a spectacular display.

Enjoy the Acoma Pueblo Christmas Celebrations in the San Esteban Del Rey Mission. Cultural dances celebrating the birth of the Christ Child are performed December 25-28.

If outdoor adventure is more your speed, we are conveniently located in between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, a short drive to great skiing and snowboarding resorts. What better way to unwind after a hard day on the slopes than in one our charming rooms with a hot soak in your private jacuzzi tub?

Looking for a unique way to spend time with your family this holiday season? The entire place is available to rent for private getaways. We would love to celebrate with you!

Why It Might Be Time For You To Elope

November 27th, 2015 by InsideOut Solutions

1098079_10153313811260413_301005082_nIt’s true, eloping isn’t for everyone. If you’ve always dreamed of having that huge wedding with all 500 of your relatives on hand to watch you walk down the isle, then maybe elopement is not for you.

If, however, you love the idea of a small, intimate ceremony that’s low stress and won’t break the bank, then you are in the right place. Hacienda Vargas Bed and Breakfast and Wedding Chapel is a highly recommended, picturesque  location that has been home to many quick, stress-free and extremely happy marriage ceremonies.

A recent Cosmopolitan article by Nancy Dunham really encompasses how elopement can be some couple’s ideal option when it comes to getting married. The title is “Why Eloping was the Best Decision I Ever Made”. She notes how it was the right decision for her and her fiancé. They didn’t have time or money to spend on all the details that come with planning a big wedding. Instead, running off to somewhere quiet was the perfect solution.

Consider the stress of wedding details. Everyone has probably experienced engaged friends or family members, or seen a reality TV show, in which the couple struggle with the horrendous details of gold printed napkins, the perfect wedding dress and the reality of being able to pay for the huge, dream party splashed across the pages of wedding magazines and neatly organized on Pinterest boards.

Instead, take a deep breath. Browse the photos of the quaint, relaxing Hacienda Vargas property. Imagine coming here for a quiet day, getting married in a simple ceremony in our 200-year-old chapel, then taking the rest of your visit to just be with your partner.

Following your ceremony, we are happy to provide an intimate, candlelit dinner in your suite. If you prefer to venture out, the two of you can check out some of the most romantic restaurants in Albuquerque, Antiquity or Prairie Star, before returning to your private, jacuzzi suite for a restful night with a complimentary bottle of champagne or sparkling cider.

There is some preparation required if you want your elopement to go smoothly. Make sure you take care of all the legal arrangements beforehand.

One thing you won’t have to worry about before heading to Hacienda Vargas is finding witnesses for your ceremony. Cynthia and Spence, long time owners of Hacienda Vargas, are there to happily be your stand in family members, helpers, and all around support on your special day.

Also, we have a special photography package with Bryan’s Photography available to you to capture those precious photos of you both on your special day. Then not only will you have something to have for your photo album, but you can use them on your marriage announcement when you let everyone know that you both have successfully tied the knot.

Will some people feel like they missed out not being included in your special day? Possibly. It’s not that they really wanted to do the chicken dance at your reception, they just want to see you both happy. When you tell them about the beauty and joy of the elopement, they should understand that it was an important step in you and your partner’s future happiness.

Hacienda Vargas supports everyone in their pursuit of being happy and whole by welcoming both same-sex and heterosexual marriage ceremonies.

Hacienda Vargas is in-between Albuquerque and Santa Fe – the perfect place to use as your wedding destination, “hub” for sightseeing, or as your quiet retreat. No matter who you are, if you are excited about hiding away for your perfect elopement then give Hacienda Vargas a call at (505) 273-6618. You can also make your reservations online.

It’s Time to Unplug and Unwind

November 6th, 2015 by Innkeeper

IMG_6427 (1)At Hacienda Vargas Bed and Breakfast and Wedding Chapel, the idea is to not only unplug, but to unplug in a place that radiates rest and relaxation. Hacienda Vargas is a bed and breakfast that’s in a beautiful location with friendly people, a great breakfast, and a quick hop from the highway and many tourist destinations.

Support for unplugging has come from recent research that has shown that exposure to blue light from devices like TVs and computers can disrupt our sleep cycles and keep us from falling asleep at night. At Hacienda Vargas you won’t find any Internet connections, or televisions (although there is cell coverage). But this idea also just works with the whole Hacienda Vargas atmosphere. Located in what was part of an old stagecoach stop with some original adobe walls and historic feel, it would seem strange to have the glow and the racket of a television.

And if you find you need to get on the Internet while you are staying at Hacienda Vargas, no worries! Hacienda Vargas may be in a quiet, farming neighborhood, but there is a Starbucks only five minutes up the road in Bernalillo. When you drive 313 from the bed and breakfast, you’ll drive past farms and historic posts, and then suddenly you’re in the heart of Bernalillo near restaurants and casinos.

It’s all because Hacienda Vargas is located in the quiet, small town of Algodones, but only a short distance from all the places people want to see in New Mexico. The big plus of the tasty breakfasts is hash browns, pumpkin pancakes, bacon, coffee, and more. And unlike staying in a hotel, you’ll get friendly, personal service. Consider checking out other reviews to see how we fare like on Trip Advisor.

Unplugging is also a great way to focus. If you are looking for a way to concentrate, consider coming to stay at Hacienda Vargas to work on that project of yours, maybe that book you’ve always wanted to write. We have tables in the dining area, as well as places in the garden and around the bed and breakfast to relax.

Or if you are coming back from a day of sightseeing in Albuquerque or Santa Fe (each are only a short distance away), come back to Hacienda Vargas, put your feet up and read a good book, do some yoga, get to know the other guests, or the B&Bs friendly dogs.

The research from Harvard also found that exposure to bright sunlight during the day will help you sleep. Where else can you find that but in sunny New Mexico! On average we get 280 sunny days a year, and our weather is generally mild.

Hacienda Vargas is in between Albuquerque and Santa Fe – the perfect place to use as your “hub”, and as your quiet retreat. If it’s time for you to give your eyes a break and your body the recharge it needs before returning to “normal” life again, then give Hacienda Vargas a call (505)867-9115 or make your online reservation today.
