Nestled along Route 66 in the Rio Grande Valley, Hacienda Vargas Bed and Breakfast and Wedding Chapel is a romantic, relaxing hideaway offering comfort and convenience for both out-of-state visitors and New Mexico residents. But what sets our cozy retreat apart is its beautiful and historic setting, reserving the spirit of the Old West, the influence of the original Spanish settlers, and the presence of the Pueblo Indian culture.
Long before its B&B days, Hacienda Vargas was the site of a stagecoach stop, a train station, a pony express station, a post office and a general store. Located on the historic El Camino Real, or Royal Highway, Hacienda Vargas lies along the historic route in which explorers, soldiers, adventurers and farmers traveled, seeking gold and land since the 16th century. Each part of the Hacienda Vargas property offers a glimpse into the region’s vibrant past.
It is thought that this particular piece of land was originally granted to a female Vigil who married into the Archibeque family.
The main Hacienda building was originally two separate buildings that date back more than 200 years ago. The south wing of the building was a stagecoach stop until around 1888 when the railroad tracks were laid across the Southwest. The wing is almost entirely adobe and very traditional with original brick floors, beamed and cove ceilings. The north wing, which includes the dining room and kitchen, is the oldest section of the main building. Its central interior wall is the original adobe and can be viewed through truth windows located off the dining room. The truth windows allow you to see original adobe walls.
The cornerstone of Hacienda Vargas, the adobe chapel is a special place with an unknown history. While we do not have a documented date of origin, we do know that it is in its original state with the exception of the new stain glass. This chapel has been the wedding site of hundreds of couples since the late 1800s.
Whether planning your own wedding or visiting for a weekend getaway, you’ll be able to experience the rich history surrounding Hacienda Vargas.
