Algodones, where our bed and breakfast is located, was originally founded as a military garrison, and provided protection for the merchant wagon trains traveling between Santa Fe and Mexico. It was a popular military supply depot, and was even occupied by General Kearney and the Army of the West in 1846. Since the 17th century, travelers and adventurers exploring El Camino Real have stopped for lodging at Hacienda Vargas. In the past, the location of our New Mexico bed and breakfast was used both as a stagecoach stop and a train station.
