New Mexico Biking Trails
Hit the biking trails throughout New Mexico, and discover the many small villages tucked away in red cliffs, and meander through the deep river gorges and piñon-scented forests. The Paseo del Bosque trail, once named a top city bike ride, runs for 15 miles through the Rio Grande’s Cottonwood Forest. Head out to the Pteroglyph National Monument, where you can enjoy the loop around the inactive volcano. You don’t have to be into mountain biking to head up the Sandia peak summit. Beginning at Cedar Crest east of Albuquerque, you can head up N.M. 14 and N.M. 536, and make the long climb up to the 10,678-foot summit at Sandia Peak.
If you’re a mountain biking enthusiast, then the Sandia foothills are the perfect place for you to explore. Here, mountain bikers will encounter steep inclines and unique high desert terrain, including large boulders and arroyos. Many of these trails are accessible from the 640 acre Elena Gallegos Open Space. Another popular location for access to some of the regions wonderful mountain biking trails is the Embudo Canyon Open Space, where the parks 2, 650 acres offer a wide range of terrain to explore. Las Huertas Canyon is a popular 22 mile mountain biking ride near both Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and is the mountain bikers choice when it comes to getting to the Sandia Crest. This physically challenging ride starts at the Rio Grande, and ends at the top of the Sandia Crest, rewarding riders with spectacular views of the Rio Grande Valley.
